Whilst many of the world's highly, some say over, paid Football (soccer) stars have gained a reputation for indulging in the excesses of living life in the fast lane, with super cars, big houses, horse racing and even excessive gambling, Ulises de la Cruz, a gifted member of Ecuador's National Team is certainly bucking that trend.

Born 32 years ago in a village high in the Andes Mountains, about 3 hours drive from the capital Quito, De la Cruz now plays for the English Premiership Team, Reading, just outside London.
Ulises has set up the "De la Cruz Foundation" which the defender supports with around 10% of his monthly earnings. The Foundation's priority is education - providing books, nutrition, a new school roof and playground, health, building and funding a medical centre and the latest project is a plan to build 40 new homes. However, the biggest project is a $200,000 sports and Community Centre being built high in the Andes Mountains, near the Pan American Highway.
Many local people believe De la Cruz is doing what should be their government's responsibility, but what is certain is that Ulises de la Cruz is a shining example of how true stars don't just squander their high earnings, but use it to help those in need by giving them the opportunity to improve their chances of a better life.
